The Care and Feeding of Your Temporary Crown

  • Be careful until the numbness wears off so you don’t hurt your tongue, lip, or cheek.
  • Avoid chewy substances (gum, toffee, caramels, etc) on the side where your temporary is. It is not bonded to the tooth and could dislodge with sticky food.
  • Also avoid eating hard substances (popcorn, ice cubes, nuts, etc) on the side where you have your temporary. It is only made of plastic and can chip or break.
  • Be careful flossing in the area. When you floss, after you push the floss through the tooth contact, gently pull it toward your cheek, NOT back up/down through the teeth, as this could dislodge the temporary.
  • It is not unusual to have cold and biting sensitivity with your temporary. If the sensitivity becomes more severe, lasts longer, or occurs with more than just cold or biting, please call us immediately 773-348-2704.
  • If your temporary does become loose, please call us immediately to come in to have it re-cemented. It is important for your tooth to be protected until your definitive restoration is delivered.
  • If your temporary does come loose and for some reason you cannot come right into the office, using either Fixodent (a denture adhesive) or a mixture of talcum powder and Vaseline will keep it in place temporarily. However, be VERY careful when you are eating if you need to do this for a short time.
  • If you experience anything different from what Dr. Alfe told you to expect with your temporary, please call us immediately.
