How to Keep You Smiling While Wearing Your Provisional Smile Design:
- Be careful until the numbness wears off so you don’t hurt your tongue, lips, or cheeks.
- Avoid chewy substances (gum, toffee, caramels, power bars, etc) while in your provisionals. They are not bonded to the teeth & can dislodge with sticky food.
- Also avoid eating hard substances (popcorn, ice cubes, nuts, etc) while in your provisionals. They’re only plastic & can chip or break.
- Be careful with foods & liquids with dark colors as they can stain your provisionals. If you’d drop it on a white shirt & it would leave a stain, it will stain your provisionals! Such items include coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, curry, blueberries, etc (you get the picture). You do not have to avoid all of these, but be sure to brush your teeth immediately after consuming them.
- It is not unusual to have cold & biting sensitivity with your provisionals. If the sensitivity becomes more severe, lasts longer, or occurs with more than just cold or biting, please call us immediately 773-348-2704. Often with cold substances, you may experience the “Midline Squeeze” where it feels like your teeth are contracting together. This is completely normal!
- If your provisionals become loose or chipped, please call us immediately so you can come in to have them repaired. It is important for your teeth to be protected until your porcelain restorations are delivered.
- If part of your provisional does come loose & for some reason you can not come right into the office, using either Fixodent (a denture adhesive) or a mixture of talcum powder & Vaseline will keep it in place temporarily. However, be VERY careful when you are eating if you need to do this for a short time.
- MOST important is your home care during this time! Remember to massage your gums with the hydrogen peroxide syringe three times a day. Use your floss threader as you were shown. If necessary, use your rubber tip in the areas Dr. Alfe showed you. Make sure to brush & rinse with the Closys II products at least twice a day. Immaculate hygiene will keep your gums healthy & make the delivery appointment much easier for you!
- If you experience anything different from what Dr. Alfe told you to expect with your provisionals, please call us at once!
