You have been prescribed the PerioProtect Trays to help you manage your periodontal disease. This method delivers an antimicrobial agent directly to the source of your infection. The success of this method depends upon you following Dr. Alfe’s instructions. Modifications to the treatment will be made as healing occurs.
1. Place or hold the Perio Trays open side up. Apply the Perio Gel in a thin line across the tooth indentations. If a liquid medication is prescribed, use the kit applicator and place the liquid medication according to Dr. Alfe’s instructions. Do not touch the inside of the tray with the applicator to avoid contaminating your medication source.
2. Use only a small amount of medication as these customized trays fit precisely. If the medication seeps out of the tray when seated or you taste a lot of medication, you are probably using too much.
3. Take the small brush included with your kit and evenly distribute the medication throughout the tooth indentations.
4. Place the tray into your mouth so the tray covers all the teeth and fully seats in place. Spit out any excess medication. Rinse the applicator brush with cold water and let it air dry.
5. The Perio Trays should comfortably and completely seat against the gums so the medication is directed into the periodontal pocket, delivering the solution directly to the source of the infection.
6. Wear the Perio Trays for the time prescribed by Dr. Alfe. The frequency and duration of use will be modified as healing occurs.
7. Remove the trays after the prescribed time has elapsed. Rinse your mouth thoroughly or brush your teeth to remove any excess medication.
8. After every treatment, rinse your trays with COLD water. DO NOT USE HOT WATER! At least once a day, brush your trays thoroughly with a small amount of hydrogen peroxide gel or use a toothpaste containing baking soda.
9. Gently towel dry the Perio Trays and place them back into the storage container for future use.
Swelling decreases and gum tissues heal with treatment. The tray seal may not be able to direct the medication as prescribed when swelling decreases, and a new tray may be necessary. Let Dr. Alfe know if you begin to taste more of the medication over time.
It is very important that you continue to brush and floss your teeth. Perio Trays do NOT replace brushing and flossing, but they may make brushing and flossing more successful in removing calculus and tartar. If there are any adverse reactions, stop using this method immediately and contact Dr. Alfe.
