Dr. Alfe on FOX Chicago Morning News
Dr. Alfe appeared on FOX Chicago Morning News Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 9:50 AM! She discussed oral cancer, the VELscope® exam and the relatively new test, OralDNA, which is a simple swish/gargle test that detects HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). As many of you may know now, HPV is one of the leading causes of oral cancer. It is now tied with tobacco and alcohol as a causative factor. And 25% of all oral cancer patients have no risk factors at all.
Michael Douglas recently revealed that he is suffering from throat cancer and that he has a history of HPV infection. We are hopeful that his story will inspire others to get tested. HPV is often present without signs or symptoms. The increasing incidence of oral sex, especially among young adults, has been a compelling reason to get tested.
The Gardisil vaccine should also help stem the spread of HPV and experts are recommending that both males as well as females be tested and immunized.
